Speaking of happiness, I want to discuss it. It sounds like a pretty simple question, “What is happiness?” In reality, it’s a very hard question to answer because it’s different for every individual. You may be able to define it but when you think about happiness it’s really whatever satisfies you. I was also thinking about what satisfies us now in the time that we live in where cell phones are glued to peoples hands along with iPads and any other electronic device. Now, don’t get me wrong. I love my phone. It keeps me connected to my best friends while we are all getting an education, my mother and my sister who is currently living in Exeter, England for the year.
Although we have these devices in our lives, are they the thing that makes us happy? When I think of happiness I think of the simplest things in life. If we could not afford all of these nice things we have or if they were not even invented then what would makes us truly happy? It makes me realize that having the basic necessities is really what makes people happy, or what makes me happy anyway. If you think about it, we all (hopefully) have food, water, clothing and some kind of shelter to keep us warm. I know it’s silly to think about but if we didn’t have those things would we be happy?
What about our family and friends? Humans are designed to interact with one another and people love being around one another, just not all the time. I think part of what makes me happy is having a family that loves me and also friendship. Having cell phones, and laptops and other things like that is just the icing on the cake. I also become happy when I think of my dreams and if I could ever reach them.
It truly is the simple things in life that make all the difference. I encourage all of you to sit down and really think about what makes you content. Not just what makes you smile but what really and truly makes you happy.
Until next time,
